DescriptionWe're all well aware that a great deal of change is needed in this country's defunct political system (well, at least I hope I'm not alone in thinking this!). The question we have to ask is whether this change can be even understood by our existing political bodies. Are they capable of delivering the kind of changes that seem to be so desperately needed? I can only say that I am very pessimistic on this matter. Whilst the expenses affair has brought a great deal of renewed interest in politics amongst many people (myself included), what will actually be done about it? Democracy in this country is badly undermined by the actions of those in both Government and Opposition over the last few years. We have a Prime Minister with very little in the way of public support, and worse still, the PM has never been actually elected to his position, only put in by his own party. We see unpopular laws drafted, again without popular approval or consent (ID cards anyone?), and a general shift of attitude from all levels of Government from being one of Public Service, to one of Public Rule. So, I'd be interested to find out what members of the Union feel needs to be changed! -
